November Scientist of the Month: Dr. Steve Smith

November 2013

Steve is a marine biologist based at Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre. He specialises in the biodiversity of subtropical marine habitats and is particularly interested in molluscs and how these animals respond to changes in their environment. Most of his research is linked to sustainable management of biodiversity and he consequently works closely with scientists and managers from a range of government organisations. Steve is a keen advocate of community based science programs (citizen science) and has completed a number of projects in which volunteers have surveyed and collected marine debris, both above and below the ocean.
